1. Why do I need to create PGP keys?

The essence of our entire development is to ensure complete safety of correspondence in Jabber. Therefore, you need a pair of keys for encryption to work. You don’t need to understand how it works, but a key is a must. It should also be noted that the longer your PGP key, the slower the process of message encryption and decryption.

2. How to register your account at sj.ms?

  • - In the menu "Add/Configure Accounts" click on our brand icon with the caption "SJ IM Secure Server"
  • - Enter an account name of your choice (for example, "My Account")
  • - Enter your desired username in the field "Jabber ID" on our server (for example, [email protected]); be sure to specify the full nickname with the server’s prefix, @sj.ms
  • - Check the box "Register a new Jabber ID on the server"
  • - Specify a password that you will remember
  • - Check the box "Save Password" to save your default password
  • - Now you are registered on our server and can start communicating (add our technical support [email protected] to your contacts so that you can address us in case you need help).

3. How to register your jabber account on a different jabber server?

  • - WARNING: not all jabber servers support account registration through the client. Visit our blog for a list of jabber servers.
  • - Click "XMPP" in the menu "Add/Configure Accounts"
  • - Enter an account name of your choice (for example, "My Account")
  • - Enter a desired username in the field "Jabber ID" on the server ([email protected] jabber.com); be sure to specify the full nickname with the server’s prefix: @server_jabber.com
  • - Check the box "Register a new Jabber ID on the server"
  • - Specify a password that you will remember
  • - Check the box "Save Password" to save your default password

4. I have a jabber account. How to add it to your program?

  • - Click "XMPP" in the menu "Add/Configure Accounts"

  • - Check if the server specified in "Server" field is correct.
  • - Specify the server port. By default, 5222 is the port used by StarTLS connection. If you need a SSL port, enter 5223 (make sure that the server where you have registered an account uses these ports).

5. I have a qip account. How do I add it?

  • - Click "QIP" in the menu "Add/Configure Accounts"
  • - Enter an account name of your choice (for example, "My Account")
  • - Enter your full login on the server (For example, [email protected])
  • - Enter the password to your account
  • - Check the box "Save password" (optional)
  • - Leave the fields "Server" and "Port" unchanged
  • - Click "add".

6. I have been using Google Talk for a long time. How do I add it?

  • - Click "Google Talk" in the menu "Add/Configure Accounts"
  • - Enter an account name of your choice (for example, "My Account")
  • - Enter your full login on the server (For example, [email protected])
  • - Enter the password to your Google Talk account
  • - Check the box "Save password" (optional)
  • - Leave the fields "Server" and "Port" unchanged

7. How do I add my Facebook account?

  • - Click "Facebook" in the menu "Add/Configure Accounts".
  • - Enter an account name of your choice (for example, "My Account")

  • - Enter the password to your Facebook account
  • - Check the box "Save password" (optional)
  • - Leave the fields "Server" and "Port" unchanged

8. How to send a file?

There are 2 ways of sending files via SJ IM for Android

  1. Sending files directly from Android OS
  • - Select the file you want to send via SJ IM
  • - Hold the option "Send To" and click SJ IM in the pop-up window for sending files
  • - Choose a friend to whom you want to send the file
  • - Press "+" in the left corner of the screen
  • - Select a service through which you want to send the file (SJ IM or SendSpace)
  • - Wait while the file is sent to the server

9. How to enable the OTR encryption (Off-The-Record)?

  • - Choose a person with whom you want to enable the OTR encryption
  • - In the upper right corner next to the "XML" icon, select the icon with the "Lock"
  • - Select "OTR" (Off-The-Record)
  • - Click "accept"
  • - Wait while the person confirms your "Fingerprint"

10. How to configure a PGP encryption with other clients?

PGP encryption between SJ - SJ is adjusted automatically

There are two ways of configuring PGP encryption with other clients in the SJ IM

  1. Automatic:
  • - Choose a person with whom you want to configure the PGP encryption
  • - Ask your conversation partner to send you a text message containing his/her public PGP key
  • - Upon receiving notification from the program, be sure to send your public PGP key to your conversation partner
  • - Wait until your conversation partner signs your public key
  • - Send a message or wait until your conversation partner sends you a message
  • - An orange lock should appear in front of the text message from your conversation partner (or in front of yours).
  • - If something does not work, please contact our support team: JID [email protected]

  1. Manual:
  • - Exchange public keys with your conversation partner! There are plenty of ways to do it (via e-mail, flash drive, etc.)
  • - Copy the entire key to the clipboard (along with "Begin" and "END")
  • - Choose a person with whom you want to configure the PGP encryption
  • - Click "Settings" icon next to the "Lock" icon
  • - Select "PGP settings"
  • - Select "Assign public key"
  • - Insert the public key in the box and click OK
  • - If something does not work, please contact our support team: JID [email protected]

11. I accidentally pressed cancel when trying to start an encrypted dialogue! How to solve this problem?

  • - Log in to the dialog
  • - Press "Settings" icon located in the upper right corner next to the "Lock" icon
  • - Select "PGP settings"
  • - Select the sub-menu "Send my public key"
  • - Press ОК
  • - If something does not work, please contact our support team: JID [email protected]

12. How to disable encryption?

  • - Open the chat window with the person for whom you want to stop the encrypted session
  • - In the upper right corner select the "Lock" icon
  • - In the window that appears, select "Disable the encryption"

13. How to view the history for a certain day?

  • - In the upper right corner of the main window containing all the contacts, click the "Clock" icon located near the large icons "+"
  • - Enter a password for the message history (the same as for your PGP key pair)
  • - In the drop-down menu, select the date for which you need to view the history
  • - Press "ОК"

14. How to search through history?

  • - In the upper right corner of the main window containing all the contacts, click the "Clock" icon located near the large icons "+"
  • - Enter a password for the message history (the same as for your PGP key pair)
  • - Select the "Dialogues" sub-menu
  • - Enter text in the search box
  • - Click "Search"
  • - A list of messages containing the word, dates and conversation partners will appear.

15. Could not connect to the server. What do I do?

  • - Check your Internet connection
  • - Make sure that all the data are correct and contain the username and password in the correct format, including large letters in the password and the "@" symbol in the login

16. How to add a new conversation partner to my jabber?

  • - Once you have added a profile, select "+" in the main menu
  • - Enter your interlocutor’s full JID including "@"symbol ([email protected])
  • - Fill in the "Contact Name" (optional)
  • - Select the Account (profile), to which you want to add a contact
  • - Press "ОK"

17. I do not want the application to remember my history. How to disable it?

  • - In the upper left corner of the main window, click on our brand icon
  • - Select "Interface"
  • - Remove the check mark in the menu "Remember my history"
  • - Message history will not be saved
  • - Press the cross in the upper right corner

18. I type fast and prefer qwerty-layout on my phone. How do I switch it?

  • - In the upper left corner of the main window, click on our brand icon

  • - Check the box "Allow screen rotation"

19. How to change the interface language?

21. How to add a profile pic?

  • - Click "Configure" (gearwheel) in the main menu next to your profile’s name
  • - Press on an empty square with a picture of an alien
  • - Select a picture from the ones you have in your device
  • - Wait until the program fulfills all the notes and you will have a profile pic

22. I want to automatically open the window when a message is received. How to do it?

  • - In the main program window, click on our brand icon in the upper left corner
  • - Select "Events" sub-menu
  • - Activate the check box next to "Open the window when a new message arrives"
  • - Press the cross in the upper right corner

23. How to disable updates notification in the background?

  • - In the main program window, click on our brand icon in the upper left corner
  • - Select "Events" sub-menu
  • - Uncheck "Display notifications in the background"
  • - Press the cross in the upper right corner

24. How do I export my key pair to another device?

  • - In the main program window, click on our brand icon in the upper left corner
  • - Select "PGP"
  • - Enter a password for your key pair
  • - Press "Export private key"
  • - Press "Export public key"
  • - Using selection, copy your keys and send them where you prefer

25. I cannot find a contact, what do I do?

  • - In the upper right corner of the main menu, click the Search button (the magnifying glass)
  • - In the entry field, enter information you remember about the contact (such as letter "A", for example)
  • - SJ IM will automatically show all the contacts that contain the entered information

26. How to completely disable the program?

  • - In the control panel on your phone, move the SJ IM application icon upwards or to the side (depending on the brand)

27. How to make sure the messages are really encrypted?

  • - In the chat window with a contact, click the "XML" icon in the upper right corner
  • - Check the box "Keep an XML log in the background"
  • - Now you will see all the transmitted information

28. How to copy your contact’s JID?

  • - In the contact list, hold the ID which you want to copy
  • - In the contact menu, select "Copy Jabber ID"
  • - Now the ID of the selected contact is stored in the buffer

29. My conversation partner bored me and I want to add him/her to the blacklist

  • - In the contact list, hold the ID which you want to add to the blacklist
  • - In the contact menu under the "Blacklist" check the checkbox "Do not receive messages and files from this contact"
